What is Medical Surgical Nursing? (Med-Surg Nursing)
Medical Surgical, many times referred to as Med-Surg, is the foundation of the nursing profession. It covers a broad range of disease processes and pre & post surgical interventions. The Med-Surg nurse is a "jack of all trades" that oversees and provides holistic care for a range of adult patients with disease processes from head to toe.
The specialty of Med-Surg nurses holds more nurses than any other specialty. Med-Surg nurses play a large role in assessing patients, planning patient care, implementing patient care and evaluating the outcomes of the desired care plans.
Med-Surg Travel Nursing Jobs Outlook:
A minority of hospitals will accept Medical Surgical nurses with a minimum of one year experience. The vast majority of hospitals require a minimum of two years of recent experience in a Medical Surgical environment.
As noted above, Med-Surg nurses comprise a very large group. As a result, securing a travel Med-Surg position can be very competitive. Many times a Med-Surg nurse will be competing with 10-30 other nurses for the same position. It is highly advisable for any Med-Surg nurse to request submission to multiple hospitals simultaneously to increase chances of landing an assignment in a timely manner.
